A delegation from the Mayors’ Migration Council (MMC), accompanied by Freetown City Council officials, visited Congo Market yesterday to unveil plans for a $200,000 (Le4,670,000) market upgrade aimed at improving infrastructure, sanitation, and trader livelihoods.

The three-person MMC delegation, led by Mr. Samer Saliba, Director of City Practice at MMC, revealed that the grant will fund:

Biodigester installation-powered by bio-waste collected from the market.

Public toilet rehabilitation-two toilets will be refitted to provide liquid waste for the biodigester.

Cold room construction-enabling traders to store perishable goods, reduce waste, and boost incomes.

During the visit, city officials also announced that new shade covers with solar lights will be installed at the market starting Saturday, 25th October, replacing covers destroyed by a storm in 2023.

“The MMC-funded interventions will improve working conditions for rural-urban migrants while promoting sanitation and a circular economy that directly benefits women and youth traders,” said officials at the event.

Freetown, home to a growing number of rural-urban migrants, continues to prioritize sustainable development initiatives that enhance market infrastructure and support economic empowerment.
