High Court judge Cosmotina Jarrett has handed a 15-year prison sentence to Edward Bangura after he pleaded guilty to the illegal possession of a prohibited drug, Kush. The sentencing was delivered today by Hon. Justice Cosmotina Jarrett (J) at the Main Law Courts Building, Freetown.
Bangura was charged under Section 8(a) of the National Drugs Control Act 2008 following his apprehension on 12th May 2025 in Freetown. Police officers from the Lumley Police Station found him asleep in an unregistered vehicle along Kallon Drive, off Regent Road, during a routine patrol. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered 89 wraps of Kush, weighing a total of 50 grams, which were chemically tested and confirmed as a controlled narcotic substance.
The convict immediately admitted ownership of the drugs and pleaded guilty as the charge was read in court. In delivering her judgement, Hon. Justice Cosmotina Jarrett commended Bangura for not wasting the court’s time, while also highlighting the seriousness of the offence, noting the devastating effects of drugs on Sierra Leonean youth.
“The court must send a clear message that the possession and distribution of controlled narcotic drugs will not be tolerated,” Justice Jarrett stated, emphasizing that the sentence serves as a deterrent to others.
As part of the ruling, the High Court ordered the destruction of the 50 grams of Kush in the presence of the Director of Public Prosecutions or representatives, the Deputy Master, the Registrar of the High Court, and other officials. A certificate of destruction is to be filed with the court within seven working days.
