The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has demonstrated renewed commitment and resilience in tackling narcotic drug proliferation and armed robbery in Kambia District, following a recent surge in criminal activities along the Kambia-Pamlap highway.
About three weeks ago, a gas station located between the Rogberay and Gbalamuya security checkpoints was violently attacked, with millions of Leones and foreign currencies stolen. During the incident, a firearm assigned to an officer of the Operational Support Division (OSD) also went missing, prompting a district-wide search.
Under the leadership of Inspector General William Fayia Sellu, the Executive Management Board of the SLP has intensified efforts to recover the missing weapon and clamp down on criminal networks fueling lawlessness in the district. The police hierarchy has described the recovery of the firearm as a top priority, especially during the festive season when security risks typically heighten.
In response, a covert unit of the Anti-Robbery Squad conducted a targeted operation at the residence of a man identified as Pa Kambie in Kambia, acting on intelligence related to the missing gun. The operation sent shockwaves through drug supply networks involved in the distribution of Kush, Tramadol, and the locally notorious “Ex-Tracy” (popularly called D Uman Den Yone). Many suspected dealers reportedly went into hiding, likened by residents to “mice fleeing from a cat.”
The parents of the victims of drug addiction and community members have since expressed strong support for the return and continued presence of the squad, praising their role in disrupting illegal drug markets that have devastated many young people across Kambia.
However, police sources reveal that the investigation has been complicated by the interference of “dishonest individuals” both inside and outside the force. Authorities believe that Pa Kambie may be closely linked to influential local figures whose actions have hindered the probe. This uncertainty has left residents questioning whether the Anti-Robbery Squad has withdrawn from the area or is simply operating under deeper cover.
Despite the challenges, the police confirm that the missing firearm has not yet been recovered. Two individuals, including a police officer are currently in custody assisting with the ongoing investigations.
