The Ministry of Mines and Mineral Resources (MMMR), on behalf of the Government of Sierra Leone, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China University of Geosciences (CUG) to strengthen cooperation in geoscience education and professional training. The agreement was signed on 4 December 2025.
According to the Ministry, the MoU is aimed at building human capital in the geosciences sector to support the sustainable and effective management of Sierra Leone’s mineral resources. The partnership focuses on talent development, academic–industry collaboration, and research cooperation.
Under the agreement, Sierra Leonean beneficiaries will have access to professional development opportunities, including short- and long-term training programmes, internships, and joint research initiatives. The collaboration also extends to the China Geological Survey, allowing Sierra Leonean students to participate in geological survey projects conducted within Sierra Leone using a dual-supervisor system.

The MoU further establishes coordination mechanisms between MMMR and CUG to ensure structured implementation and monitoring of agreed activities. As part of the expected expansion of the partnership, the University of Sierra Leone’s Department of Geology is set to benefit through research collaboration, curriculum development, academic exchange programmes, and the provision of teaching and learning materials.
The agreement aligns with government efforts to strengthen technical capacity within the mining and minerals sector while promoting knowledge transfer and institutional development through international cooperation.
