The Lawyers’ Society of Sierra Leone has issued a strong statement condemning the disciplinary complaint filed against its President, Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah, for his public expression on matters of public concern.
In a press release issued today, the society argued that the complaint is an unjust attempt to curtail his constitutional right to freedom of speech.
The Lawyers’ Society acknowledged the importance of maintaining the professional and ethical responsibilities of lawyers, but stressed that these responsibilities must coexist with the fundamental rights to express opinions on matters vital to the public’s confidence in the justice system.
According to the society, judicial dignity is strengthened when there is openness to scrutiny and reform, and silence should never be the standard for upholding justice.
In its statement, the Lawyers’ Society warned that the disciplinary action against its president could create a chilling effect on the independence of the legal profession, suggesting that the move could harm the credibility of the institution.
The Society raised concerns that this action may undermine the public’s trust in the Bar and Judiciary, and questioned the intent behind using discipline to silence dissent.
The Lawyers’ Society urged for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the complaint, emphasising that such actions must be avoided to defend freedoms, integrity, and institutional independence.
They also called for caution in using disciplinary measures to suppress lawful expression, stressing the importance of standing firmly with those, like President Marrah, who are facing retaliation for speaking out.
The Society further stressed the need for maturity in handling the situation, advocating for restraint over retaliation, and urging a focus on dialogue and understanding instead of resistance. The statement underscored the critical role of trust in both the Bar and the Judiciary and called for leadership that restores confidence through humility and evolution.
In conclusion, the Lawyers’ Society appealed to the legal community to unite in defending liberty, dignity, and truth, with the belief that such values, when upheld, will allow justice to thrive.

I think the Lawyers Society should have some sense of responsibility and discipline. What is wrong if a Lawyer is being questioned regarding his utterance why not defend his action before the committee instead of trying to stop him from appearing to answer to his query. Let them set a good example to maintain public trust.
