Workers at CTC Port in Maforki Chiefdom will benefit from significant improvements in their welfare following a successful resolution to end a strike that disrupted port operations.

The industrial action, prompted by concerns over staff welfare, was resolved after Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, engaged directly with both port management and workers. Accompanied by the Commissioner of Labour and senior ministry officials, Minister Swaray held separate discussions with management, staff, the local Member of Parliament, and the Paramount Chief to address the core grievances.

As part of the agreement, the company has pledged to provide a comprehensive medical facility for all staff, covering their spouses and up to four dependents under the age of 18. Workers will also receive necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), ensuring safer working conditions across the port.

In addition, the company has committed to reviewing its current salary structure to ensure fair and competitive remuneration. Employees will receive detailed, itemized payslips at the end of each month, improving transparency in compensation.

To strengthen institutional support for workers, a dedicated Human Resources Officer and a Finance Officer will be recruited, both granted the autonomy necessary to carry out their roles effectively. A Human Resources manual, approved by the Ministry, will also be developed to guide staff-management relations and safeguard employee rights. Furthermore, a separate Terminal Benefit account will be established for staff and their dependents.

Minister Swaray praised the cooperative efforts of both staff and management, emphasizing the importance of workers’ welfare. “Our primary focus was to ensure that the legitimate welfare concerns of the workers are addressed while maintaining operational continuity of this vital port,” he said.

The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security will closely monitor the implementation of all agreed-upon measures to ensure they are delivered in full and on schedule, providing a sustainable framework for improved worker welfare at CTC Port.
