President Julius Maada Bio has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusivity, honesty, accountability and transparency following Sierra Leone’s impressive ranking among Africa’s best-governed nations.

Sierra Leone has secured 9th position on the latest World Economic Governance Index (WEGI), breaking into the top ten best-governed countries on the continent. The ranking places the country alongside established governance leaders such as Mauritius and Cape Verde, marking one of the most notable improvements recorded in the region during the latest reporting cycle.

Reacting to the development, President Bio described the ranking as affirmation of the government’s drive to transform Sierra Leone into a thriving nation.

“I am committed to inclusivity, honesty, accountability and transparency. Sierra Leone ranks 9th in the World Economics Ranking of good governance in Africa, affirming our drive to transform Sierra Leone into a thriving nation,” he stated.

“Congratulations our potential is limitless! Let’s continue working together for a brighter future.”

According to the index, the improved ranking reflects a significant upward trend in institutional transparency and political stability within the country. Sierra Leone now stands among Africa’s top governance performers, including Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Ghana, Senegal, Malawi and The Gambia.

The World Economic Governance Index provides a composite score for each nation by aggregating data from multiple international datasets and expert assessments. Its methodology evaluates governance standards, transparency, institutional effectiveness and political stability.

Analysts note that the 9th-place ranking sends a positive signal to international investors and development partners. By offering an independent, data-driven assessment of governance performance, the index helps reduce perceived risks associated with foreign direct investment (FDI) while guiding policymakers on areas requiring further reform.
