The Current Presidential Adviser on Gender, Isata Jabbie Kabba, has claimed that corruption in Sierra Leone is partly driven by men in positions of authority who misuse public funds to maintain multiple romantic relationships.

Kabba made the remarks in an interview with Truth Media, where she argued that the country could see a significant reduction in corruption if women were given greater opportunities to lead.

According to her, many of the social and governance challenges facing Sierra Leone are largely linked to the dominance of men in leadership roles. She alleged that some men who occupy positions of power engage in corrupt practices in order to satisfy the financial demands of several girlfriends.

Most of the men in this country have more than five girlfriends, and in order to satisfy them they steal public money to build houses and meet their demands,” Kabba said during the interview.

She further noted that the pressure to impress romantic partners has contributed to unnecessary spending, pointing to the increasing cost of luxury items often used to attract or maintain such relationships.

Kabba specifically mentioned that the price of human hair products has risen significantly, with some costing as much as Le8,000. According to her, some men prioritize spending on girlfriends while neglecting their wives and families.

Kabba also used the opportunity to reflect on her time as President of the All Political Parties Women Association, where she said the organization once received strong support from international partners.

She explained that the association played an important role in promoting women’s participation in politics and governance across the country. However, she lamented that the progress made by the organization eventually slowed due to a lack of sustained support.

Kabba said successive governments failed to consistently back the association, a situation she believes weakened its operations and limited its ability to continue advancing the political empowerment of women.

The Presidential Adviser maintained that increasing women’s participation in leadership and governance could help address some of the governance and corruption challenges facing the country.
