President Julius Maada Bio has disclosed that he was in a Middle Eastern country when escalating tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran led to the closure of regional airspace — a revelation that comes weeks after opposition figures claimed without evidence that he was stranded in Dubai.
Speaking during Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers at State Lodge, the President described being in the region when strikes reportedly began, acknowledging that the situation was tense as military operations unfolded.
“I was in the Middle East when the strikes started and bombs were being exchanged,” he said.
The President’s remarks directly addressed speculation that had circulated in early March, when opposition politician Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray alleged that President Bio had traveled secretly to Dubai and was unable to return due to the escalating conflict. The claim was later amplified by former Attorney General Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, who demanded transparency with a social media post reading, “Like Scooby-Doo, where are you Mr President?”
President Bio said that while critics speculated he might become stranded, authorities in the host country assured him of their full support.
“Some people thought I would be stuck there, but God is great,” he said. “The same people told me they would ensure I return home safely.”
According to the President, officials told him that whenever he was ready to leave, arrangements would be made to facilitate his departure despite the restrictions.
“They told me when I am ready to leave their country, they will take me out ‘the soldier way’ — and they did,” he said, expressing appreciation for the assistance he received.
The President commended the host nation for their swift coordination, noting that special arrangements enabled his return at a time when civilian flights were largely suspended due to the security situation.
At the height of the rumors on March 3, State House Communications Director Myk Berewa had dismissed the speculation, stating simply: “Disregard their usual chatter; President Bio is right here in Sierra Leone.”
