A dispute is brewing within Sierra Leone’s football structure as the Western Area Football Association (WAFA) is resisting an interim directive from the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) Disciplinary Committee to reinstate FC Johansen into the Division One League.

WAFA insists that the 2025/2026 Division One season was properly organized and completed, with all clubs fulfilling their obligations under an agreed structure. The association argues that the competition has already concluded and its outcomes should stand.

The conflict began when WAFA organized a league that FC Johansen has described as a “snappy league.” The club alleges the tournament violated statutes set by FIFA, the Confederation of African Football, and the SLFA itself. According to the club, it was never formally notified or invited to participate.

FC Johansen’s management says its leadership reached out to SLFA President Babadi Kamara, who reportedly indicated he was unaware of the competition and promised to investigate. The club was later informed of its relegation to Division Two.

After initially considering an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), FC Johansen chose to pursue the matter through the SLFA’s internal judicial structures. The Disciplinary Committee then issued an interim ruling setting aside WAFA’s relegation decision and ordering the club’s reinstatement pending a full hearing.

While welcoming the ruling, FC Johansen has expressed frustration over delays in enforcement. Team officials report financial losses exceeding $20,000, citing player departures following the club’s relegation.

WAFA has defended its position, arguing that financial constraints faced by clubs necessitated adjustments to the league format. The association says most teams complied with the revised structure and that adequate communication was provided through official channels. WAFA has also cautioned that enforcing the interim order could create further disputes among other clubs.

The association clarified that FC Johansen’s placement in Division Two remains provisional, pending a final ruling from the SLFA.

Both sides now await a final determination from the SLFA Disciplinary Committee, expected on 20th April.
