Dr. Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai, Executive Director of Sierra Leone’s National Sports Authority (NSA), has clarified that Mohamed Kallon’s appointment as head coach of the Leone Stars was based on a verbal agreement rather than a formal written contract.
Speaking on the Radio Democracy “Good Morning” programme, Abdulai explained that contracts can take two forms written or verbaland noted that in this case, the parties had only reached a verbal understanding.
He emphasized that the responsibility for formalizing contracts with national team coaches is shared among the NSA, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), and the Ministry of Sports. According to him, during his two years in office, no formal written contracts have been signed with any national team coach.
The clarification comes amid growing public concern following Kallon’s recent termination, which has raised questions within football circles and among supporters across Sierra Leone.
Kallon served as head coach for 13 months under the verbal arrangement. Abdulai noted that discussions had been ongoing to finalize the terms of a written contract, but these were never concluded.
The development highlights broader challenges in sports governance in Sierra Leone, where overlapping institutional responsibilities can create uncertainties in contractual processes.
It also raises concerns about the risks associated with relying on verbal agreements in professional sports management.
