The Freetown City Council (FCC) has issued a public warning about individuals and groups allegedly moving through markets in the city, falsely claiming to register market women under the Heat Index Insurance Project while unlawfully collecting money.
In an official statement released on Saturday, FCC said it has received multiple reports of such fraudulent activities and is urging the public to remain vigilant. The Council emphasized that registration under the Heat Index Insurance Project is “completely free of charge” and does not require any form of payment.
According to the statement, FCC, with support from AB Entheos Ltd., is currently conducting official registration for market women who sell perishable goods in designated locations across Freetown.
These markets include Dove Cut Market, Hagan Street Market, Bombay Market, Congo Market, Salad Ground Market, Lumley Market, Allen Town Market, Portee Market, Calaba Town Market, Approved School Market, Low-Cost Market, and Shell Market.
FCC cautioned market women and residents against making payments or sharing personal information with individuals who claim to represent the Council without proper identification and authorization. The Council described such actions as unlawful and warned that they undermine public trust.
“The FCC further condemns any attempt to exploit market women and other vulnerable groups under false pretenses. Such actions are unlawful, undermine public trust and will not be tolerated,” the statement read.
The Council also confirmed that it is working closely with relevant authorities to investigate the incidents, with the aim of identifying and holding those responsible accountable.
Members of the public have been encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or directly to the Freetown City Council.
FCC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents and ensuring accurate and timely communication regarding the Heat Index Insurance Project and other initiatives intended to support the people of Freetown.
