The Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, on Thursday, 9th July 2026, received in audience Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, the Canadian High Commissioner accredited to Sierra Leone and resident in Accra, Ghana.

According to the Mayor, talks centred on strengthening cooperation and identifying partnership opportunities between Freetown City Council and Canada. Key among them: waste-to-energy initiatives and other sustainable urban projects to build a cleaner, greener, and more resilient Freetown.

The engagement reflects ongoing efforts to deepen collaboration and explore opportunities that will contribute to sustainable development and improved service delivery in the municipality. High Commissioner Montrat, who presented her letters of credence to President Julius Maada Bio in June 2025, has previously worked with Sierra Leonean institutions, including supporting training programmes for law enforcement officers through the Canadian High Commission.

The focus on waste-to-energy aligns with Freetown’s broader climate action agenda under the Transform Freetown development plan. The city has been exploring innovative solutions to urban challenges, including the Climate Resilient Market Hub project, which aims to introduce biodigester technology to convert organic waste into energy while creating green jobs for women and youth.

Mayor Aki-Sawyerr has also been engaging with international partners through platforms such as the C40 Cities network to advance the city’s climate resilience and sustainable development goals.
