Residents of Kono district in Sierra Leone are urgently calling for government intervention following two recent earth tremors, which they suspect are linked to underground mining activities.

The tremors, which occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 9:59 PM and again on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at 12:14 AM, have caused visible cracks in numerous homes, raising fears of a potential disaster.

In a statement circulated by Lansana Dauda, a Kono resident, the community expresses deep concern for their safety and the future of their district. They fear that a subsequent tremor could lead to widespread destruction and loss of life.

Dauda imploreed authorities and stakeholders to take immediate action, emphasizing that the situation is a “cry for help.”

The residents are demanding an immediate investigation into the cause of the tremors, a halt to unsafe mining activities until proper safety measures are in place an support for affected households whose homes have already been damaged.

They urge the Sierra Leone government to intervene before the situation escalates into a full-blown disaster.

“Kono has given so much to this nation our lands are rich, but our people must not pay the price with their lives. We call on the Government of Sierra Leone to intervene urgently before this turns into a disaster. Prevention is better than cure.” the statement reads.
