Rehabilitation work has commenced on the Makeni–Makama Road, with contractors currently undertaking grading activities as part of preparations for the road’s eventual tarring.
The development follows a widely discussed account by Abie Nancy Sesay Conteh, Advocacy and Communication Officer for the National Commission for Children North, who shared her painful experience of losing a five-month pregnancy while travelling along the road to seek medical care.
According to Conteh, the deplorable condition of the road contributed to the difficulties she encountered during her journey to access healthcare services. Her account drew public attention to the challenges faced by residents and road users who rely on the Makeni–Makama Road for transportation and access to essential services.
The ongoing grading works are the first visible signs of efforts to improve the condition of the road ahead of its planned tarring. Contractors have been seen carrying out rehabilitation activities along sections of the route, raising hopes among residents that long-standing transportation challenges will soon be addressed.
Residents of communities along the corridor have welcomed the commencement of the works, describing the intervention as timely and necessary. Many say the poor state of the road has for years affected movement, increased travel time, and created difficulties for people seeking healthcare and other essential services.
The rehabilitation effort comes amid growing concerns about the impact of poor road infrastructure on public safety and access to medical facilities, particularly for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, children and the elderly.
Residents expressed optimism that the planned tarring of the road will provide a lasting solution to the challenges associated with the route. They believe a properly surfaced road will improve transportation, facilitate quicker access to healthcare facilities, enhance safety for commuters and support economic activities in communities along the Makeni–Makama corridor.
While the grading works continue, residents remain hopeful that the rehabilitation project will progress as planned and ultimately deliver the long-awaited improvements expected from the road’s eventual tarring.
The commencement of the rehabilitation works marks a major step toward improving one of the key routes serving communities in and around Makeni, following concerns brought into the public spotlight by Conteh’s account of her tragic loss.
