Authorities at Philomath International Academy in Matagelema have appealed to the Government of Sierra Leone, development partners, philanthropists, and community members for assistance to address financial constraints affecting the school’s operations and infrastructure.
The school, which serves children in Matagelema and surrounding areas, provides primary and secondary education within the Moyamba District education system. According to the school administration, limited resources have made it difficult to meet several infrastructure and logistical needs.
Key challenges identified include a shortage of benches and classroom furniture, which school officials say has forced many pupils to learn under difficult conditions. The administration also noted the need for renovation of existing structures, stating that several classrooms require repairs to create a safer and more conducive learning environment.
“We are committed to educating the children of this community, but the financial challenges are becoming overwhelming. We need support to provide benches for our pupils and renovate the school so that teaching and learning can take place in a better environment,” a school representative said.
Community members have echoed the appeal, noting that improved facilities would benefit current pupils and support long-term development in Matagelema and nearby communities. Residents are calling on the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, local authorities, non-governmental organisations, corporate institutions, and individuals to consider providing infrastructure support.
Stakeholders said investment in the school could help enhance access to quality education for hundreds of children in the rural community.
