The Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) has resolved to review the boundaries of Sierra Leone into Constituencies using the minimum review of five years.

“We have set up the boundary delimitation Committee to facilitate the review process. It is expected that by October ending the process would have been completed,” ECSL Chairman, Mohamed Konneh, said at the presentation of the Commission’s 2021 annual report to President Julius Maada Bio at State House.

He said the Commission has a mandate to review the division of Sierra Leone into constituencies at an interval of not less than five years and not above seven years.

He said the provisional result of the 2021 Mid Term Housing and Population Census shows a significant shift in population at district level. He said his Commission has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Statistics Sierra Leone for collaborative support on technical issues.

He said they have submitted a budget to the Ministry of Finance for the conduct of the review. On the voter registration exercise that is expected to start September 3rd and end on October 4th 2022, ECSL has increased the number of registration centres from 3,300 to 3,630 nationwide.

Mr. Konneh said ECSL has concluded the procurement of voter registration kits and soft wares and two thousand laptop computers and accessories for the voter registration exercise. He said they will be working with National Civil Registration Authority (NCTA) to extract data for the purpose of updating the voters register .

Mr Konneh disclosed that they have expanded the structure of the commission from ten to fifteen, in addition to conducting over twenty two bye-elections, and over thirty Paramount Chieftaincy elections.

“I want to thank government through the Ministry of Finances for increasing the salaries of commissioners and staff by thirty percent (30%) in 2021,” Konneh said , adding that they are constructing and rehabilitating regional offices.

He assured government and the people of Sierra Leone that they remain committed to conducting, peaceful, credible elections in 2023
