Air Sierra Leone has announced it is targeting a resumption of its suspended London-Freetown and London-Banjul flight services between late May and early June 2026.

In a press release issued on May 5, the national carrier provided an operational update, revealing it is in “advance stage discussion” with three prospective aircraft suppliers. This process is described as a critical step toward securing a reliable, long-term operational partner following the sudden collapse of its previous provider.

“Overall progress remains firmly on track, and the airline is working diligently to ensure that all requirements are met to the highest safety and operational standards,” the airline stated. The targeted timeline for resuming flights remains subject to final regulatory approvals and operational readiness.

To facilitate the return to service, regulatory procedures are currently underway with civil aviation authorities in Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and the United Kingdom.

The update follows the sudden liquidation of UK-based Ascend Airways on April 27, which abruptly left Air Sierra Leone without any aircraft. Ascend Airways had been the sole provider for the airline’s intercontinental operations, supplying the aircraft, flight crew, maintenance, and insurance under a wet-lease arrangement. The unexpected shutdown forced Air Sierra Leone to temporarily suspend its flights for the month of May.

In previous statements, Group Chief Operating Officer Sukhjinder Mann expressed shock over Ascend Airways’ collapse, noting the airline had no prior indication of their partner’s financial troubles. Despite the significant operational setback, Mann emphasized that Air Sierra Leone remains financially stable and is committed to maintaining its position as a key carrier connecting West Africa to Europe.

The airline extended its sincere appreciation to passengers for their patience and understanding during the suspension period. Affected passengers requiring assistance are encouraged to contact the customer care team via email at [email protected] or through other official communication channels.
