The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, David Moinina Sengeh has confirmed on Social Media that President Bio has brought in additional US $363 Million and dozens of new partners to support education program since 2018

Minister Sengeh further revealed that as leaders, we need to be more transparent in how we receive funding and from whom, particularly when it goes towards impact for citizens.

He added that since 2018 alone, with President Bio’s leadership, they have received a commitment of over US$363m for programs running from 2018 to 2027 to support the government’s education service delivery.

He further emphasized that that the government is still the largest donor of education, and these external funding are complementary to government funding (22% budget)!

He suggested that the outputs for these resources include new schools (constructions); thousands of teachers trained; new curricula, policies, frameworks; millions of learning materials and books; gender parity; improved learning outcomes, etc.

He further noted that most of government funding goes to teacher salaries, school fee subsidies, exam fee subsidies, teaching and learning materials, school feeding, etc.

He pointed that “While most of the external resources are channeled through grant agents and other fiduciary entities, they also have new innovative ways of working with partners that are ground breaking not just in Sierra Leone but in the development space (Multi-Donor Trust Fund; NGO Consortium; Outcomes Funding; etc).

We have expanded our donor and partner base working directly with the government, which not only shows a vote of confidence in our vision and our ideas but also a validation of our continued results and progress.”
