Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Bio, has explained the reasons behind her championing of the ‘Hands Off Our Girls’ Campaign.

“I was more excited not because of the campaign I am running but because of the victims”.

First Lady Fatima Bio made this disclosure during an interview with Voice of America (VOA).

She began by expressing her discontent, not with the campaign she is running, but with the unfair treatment of rape victims within the justice system.

Furthermore, she highlighted the implementation of a new law providing free legal representation to rape victims in court, acknowledging that in the past, many victims couldn’t obtain justice due to the inability to afford a lawyer.

While she emphasized that abuses are not to be celebrated, she considered this development a step closer to achieving closure for the victims.

“You don’t celebrate abuse, but this is a celebration that they are now one step closer for them”.

In her concluding statement, she emphasized the additional benefit of the new law to her campaign, stating that she no longer needs to worry about which lawyer will represent a victim, as all lawyers are now mandated to provide their services for these cases.
