During the weekly press conference of the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, the Deputy Minister of Finance 1, Mrs. Kadiatu Allie announced plans to initiate deductions from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies’ (MDAs) allocations to settle payments owed to the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).

She revealed that, with the approval of the Chief Minister, the government will initiate deductions from MDAs’ allocations to settle payments owed to EDSA.

In September 2023, it was reported that Ministries, Departments, And Agencies owe EDSA about Le421 Billion in unpaid bills.

The move to deduct these debs from MDA allocations underscores the government’s commitment to honoring its financial obligations and ensuring the sustainability of essential services.

Furthermore, Mrs. Allie disclosed the government’s intention to renegotiate with Karpowership, a key energy provider, to secure more favorable terms for Sierra Leone. Highlighting the significant payments already made to the company, she emphasized the need to optimize agreements to benefit the nation economically.

In her address, Mrs. Allie also provided insight into the financial efforts made by the Ministry over the past 6 to 7 months. She revealed that approximately $36 million dollars had been disbursed to Karpowership during this period.
