The Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) have received 16 Honda motorbikes from the World Health Organization (WHO), with support from the Pandemic Fund, to strengthen disease surveillance and emergency response efforts across Sierra Leone.

According to information provided by the Ministry of Health, the motorbikes are intended to improve the ability of health workers to detect, monitor, and respond to public health threats, particularly in hard-to-reach communities across the country.

The Ministry stated that the new motorcycles will support the transportation of medical samples, facilitate rapid response to disease outbreaks, and improve access to remote areas where health services and surveillance activities can be challenging.

Health officials noted that timely transportation and communication remain critical components of effective disease surveillance and outbreak management.

The addition of the motorcycles is expected to enhance the mobility of frontline health workers and strengthen the country’s capacity to identify and contain potential health threats at an early stage.

The World Health Organization, through support from the Pandemic Fund, provided the motorcycles as part of ongoing efforts to reinforce Sierra Leone’s public health systems and emergency preparedness capabilities.

The Ministry of Health said the intervention aligns with national efforts to build a more resilient health sector and improve preparedness for future public health emergencies.

Officials further emphasized that strengthening surveillance systems at community level remains essential for protecting public health and ensuring a swift response whenever disease outbreaks occur.

The Ministry expressed appreciation to the World Health Organization and the Pandemic Fund for their continued support to Sierra Leone’s health sector, describing the donation as a major contribution to improving disease monitoring and emergency response nationwide.
