The Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) of the Sierra Leone Police has destroyed narcotic drugs valued at over two million United States dollars, in a major public demonstration of the government’s zero-tolerance stance against drug trafficking.
The destruction exercise took place on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at the TOCU Headquarters at Rogbangba Junction, Hastings. The event brought together key stakeholders from across Sierra Leone’s justice and security sectors, reinforcing a coordinated, multi-agency approach in the fight against narcotics.
The 461 cartons of narcotic drugs were initially intercepted in March 2026 at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay by the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), which subsequently handed them over to TOCU for further action.
The destruction was carried out through incineration at the TOCU Headquarters pit, followed by the official signing of the Certificate of Destruction. The exercise was facilitated by the SLPHA in collaboration with national security stakeholders.
Delivering the welcome address, Head of TOCU, CSP Rev. Michael J.K. Laggah, underscored the Unit’s continued commitment to tackling transnational organized crime, particularly drug-related offences, which he said pose a serious threat to national security and public health.
Speaking on behalf of the Sierra Leone Police, ACP Brima Kamara, Head of Media, Public Relations and Sports, highlighted the core responsibilities of the police in the criminal justice process—from detection and apprehension to detention, investigation, and prosecution of offenders. He emphasized that effective policing relies heavily on intelligence-led operations and strong collaboration among institutions.
ACP Kamara further noted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Executive Management Board remain fully committed to supporting the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other partners in ensuring a sustained and successful fight against drug-related crimes.
In his keynote address, the Executive Director of NDLEA, Mr. Andrew Jaya Kaikai, disclosed the value of the destroyed narcotics at over two million US dollars. He commended the Head of TOCU, his deputy, and the entire team for their dedication and professionalism in combating drug trafficking.
Mr. Kaikai stressed that the fight against narcotics is not the responsibility of one institution alone, urging all citizens and stakeholders to join forces in addressing the growing menace.
Representatives from key institutions, including the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA), National Revenue Authority (NRA), Judiciary of Sierra Leone, Pharmacy Board of Sierra Leone, and the Office of National Security (ONS), also made statements, reaffirming their collective resolve to strengthen inter-agency cooperation.
The exercise has been described as a clear demonstration of the government’s unwavering stance against illegal drugs and its commitment to safeguarding communities across Sierra Leone as well as reinforcing commitments to transparency, national security, and safeguarding the country’s borders.
