The Ministry of Health, on Thursday, 15th May 2025, officially kicked off the National Health Summit at the Bintumani Hotel under the theme: “Improving Health Outcomes for All: Every Sierra Leonean Life Matters.”

Today marks a significant moment for the health sector in Sierra Leone as the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with its partners, launches the much-anticipated National Health Summit and Performance Awards 2025.

The summit has begun with very inspiring conversations about how to build on the gains made in reproductive, maternal, and child health, as well as a thorough overview of the current Mpox situation.

These critical discussions will run through the next two days of the conference. Key players in the health sector, as well as civil society actors, community representatives, and more, will participate in decisive decision-making breakout sessions that will help shape the current and future landscape of healthcare delivery in this country.

Dr. Startie M. Kenneh, Chief Medical Officer, gave an overview of the health System delivering health for all through the life stages approach. He started his presentation by saying, “The health system today is aligned with national and global goals.”

Alignment with a central focus of Sustainable Development Goal 3, UHC roadmap 2021-2030, and the MTNDP 2024-2030, he stated.  Further adding that health service delivery in the health sector is guided by: National health sector policy, the national health sector strategic plan, Essential health service package 2021-2030, the RMNCAH Strategy, the various programmatic strategic plans such as the malaria, TB, and HIV Strategies, and nutrition and NCD Strategies.

“Seeing or imaging the future, what can I do now to lead into that future? The president sees that future. We are going to deliver safety, health, not just focusing on survival, the Ministry of Health, Dr Austin Demby, stated in his address, creating a room of reflection.

Minister Austin Demby also stated that his summit is more than a gathering because it brings together great minds. we need to be united; we need to be in the same room to discuss health issues.

Let us ask questions and listen, and speak with one voice. This summit is not about celebrating ourselves, health is the backbone of any nation, he said.

May the history books say that in the middle of 2025, at an outbreak, we came together and said we will give health together.
