On Friday, August 9, 2024, the Sixth Parliament of Sierra Leone unanimously approved the First Report of the Committee on Appointments and the Public Service.

The report, presented by Hon. Bashiru Silikie, Deputy Leader of Government Business, confirmed the approval of two Presidential Nominees: Madam Princess Nyahota Baby-Rose Jah Turay as Deputy Ambassador to Sierra Leone’s Embassy in Berlin, Germany, and Ing. Samuel Jusu Alpha as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC).

Hon. Silikie emphasized that the nominees were thoroughly vetted, with evaluations of their educational backgrounds, professional achievements, asset declarations, tax compliance, and plans for their respective roles. The committee’s unanimous approval demonstrated their confidence in the candidates’ qualifications.

Hon. Bernadette Wuyata Songa, President of the Female Caucus in Parliament, supported the motion by commending the nominees and urging them to excel in their duties. She highlighted Madam Turay’s expertise in economic diplomacy and advised her to ensure financial discipline among her staff, attract investments, and protect Sierra Leoneans in Germany.

Regarding Ing. Alpha, Hon. Songa acknowledged the challenges in the electricity sector and expressed hope that his leadership would bring improvements, sharing her own experience with recent power outages.

Hon. Moses Edwin from Bonthe District praised Madam Turay’s appointment, citing her exceptional service as Financial Attaché to Sierra Leone’s Embassy in Liberia. He expressed confidence in her ability to represent the country effectively in Germany. He also urged Ing. Alpha to prioritize addressing the challenges within the EGTC to ensure reliable electricity generation.

Hon. Tamba Kelly from Kono District congratulated both nominees, stressing the importance of their roles. He encouraged Ing. Alpha to revitalize the EGTC and enhance collaboration with the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).

Hon. Emelia Lolloh Tongi from Kailahun District emphasized the Deputy Ambassador’s role in addressing the challenges faced by African migrants and encouraged Ing. Alpha to employ more local graduates to address issues in the electricity and road construction sectors.

Acting Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Dr. Unpha Gbassay Koroma, cautioned the nominees against personalizing their positions and urged them to prioritize national interests. He underscored the importance of Sierra Leone’s longstanding relationship with Germany and encouraged the Deputy Ambassador to strengthen these ties.

In his concluding remarks, Hon. Keikura C. Vandy, Chairman of the Energy Committee in Parliament, reiterated the importance of diplomatic representation and energy sector reform. He expressed concern about the challenges facing Sierra Leone’s hydroelectric power stations and urged Ing. Alpha to implement innovative strategies to improve the country’s electricity supply.

The Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, congratulated the nominees on their appointments and wished them success in their new roles.
