Sierra Leone is set to enhance its water access through a new initiative supported by Saudi Arabia, aimed at drilling 100 solar-powered boreholes in Rural areas. The Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) has initiated nationwide stakeholder engagement and social mobilisation to kick-start the project, beginning in Port Loko District.
The engagement commenced at the Port Loko District Council, where the SALWACO team, including Sheku Putka Kamara, Acting Director of Communication, Gender and Outreach, and Ing. John Hallowel, Senior Project Engineer, met with local officials to discuss the project. They were joined by Port Loko Station Manager Ing. Hamid Alpha Kamara and Monitoring and Evaluation Manager Mohamed Sankoh.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the Port Loko Council emphasized the need for precision in the project’s execution and pledged the council’s support for its successful implementation. Ing. Hallowel underscored the importance of community ownership for the project’s success.
In Kambia, the District Council Chairperson echoed the need for full council involvement to ensure the project becomes a reality. Attendees in both districts expressed their desire for proper planning, implementation, and monitoring, as well as the necessity for ongoing maintenance of the facilities once constructed.
SALWACO clarified that it would apply flexibility in project terms and conditions where appropriate and encouraged stakeholders to take ownership of the facilities, ensuring high water quality standards. The engagement is set to expand nationwide, with three teams designated to tour various locations. Deputy Managing Director Apostle Dr. Albert Harrison Harvey will lead one delegation, while project lead coordinator Ing. Marilyn George and Planning and Policy Manager Chrisla Koroma will head additional teams for specific assessments across the country.
