The management of the Sierra Leone Transport Corporation (SLRTC) has launched an investigation into the cause of a fire that destroyed six buses and caused extensive damage at the Kissy Bus Depot on Friday night.

Speaking on the incident, Mahmoud Kamara, Head of Procurement at the Sierra Leone Public Transport Authority (SLPTA), said the institution has engaged the National Fire Force to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the blaze, which reportedly occurred around 11:00 p.m.

“We engaged the National Fire Force to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire, which occurred around 11 at night,” Kamara said.

According to him, the investigation is expected to establish the exact cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Kamara described the incident as a major setback for the institution, noting that it has had a significant emotional impact on staff members.

“Our livelihood has been engulfed by fire, and nobody is happy,” he said.

He clarified that the SLPTA manages two categories of buses, the Waka Fine fleet and the Provincial Buses and confirmed that only the Provincial Buses were affected by the fire.

Kamara noted that the Provincial Bus service has been operating since 2015 but said authorities are yet to determine what triggered the blaze.

He added that the investigation will be conducted jointly by the National Fire Force and the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) to ensure a thorough assessment of the incident.

The findings of the investigation are expected to provide clarity on the cause of the fire and guide future safety measures at the depot.
