The United States Embassy in Freetown has issued an important reminder to travelers planning to visit the United States, urging them to comply with the conditions of their stay and avoid overstaying their authorized period in the country.
In a public advisory released ahead of the start of the FIFA World Cup, the Embassy emphasized the importance of monitoring the expiration date on the I-94 travel record, which determines the last day a visitor is legally permitted to remain in the United States.
According to the Embassy, remaining in the United States beyond the date indicated on the I-94 can have serious consequences, including the cancellation of a visitor’s visa, deportation, and possible restrictions on obtaining future U.S. visas.
“Know Your Stay, Protect Your Future,” the Embassy stated, warning that overstaying could jeopardize an individual’s ability to travel, study, or work in the United States in the future.
The Embassy further advised travelers to regularly check their I-94 records and ensure that they either leave the United States or secure an approved extension of stay before their authorized period expires.
The advisory comes as thousands of international visitors are expected to travel to the United States for the World Cup, prompting U.S. authorities to remind travelers of the importance of adhering to immigration regulations.
The Embassy encouraged all travelers to verify their status through the official I-94 online portal and remain compliant with U.S. immigration laws to avoid penalties that could affect future travel opportunities.
