Sierra Leone’s Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah, has defended President Julius Maada Bio’s frequent overseas trips, insisting they have yielded more economic benefits than the costs incurred.

Speaking in a radio interview last week, Minister Bah was responding to a question from journalist Amadu Lamrana Bah, who raised concerns about the impact of the President’s travels on the country’s struggling economy.

President Bio’s trips have brought more economic gains to Sierra Leone than the millions of Leones spent on them,” the minister said, dismissing criticism that the journeys were wasteful.

President Bio has faced growing pressure from citizens and opposition figures over his frequent foreign travels since assuming office in 2018. Last week, journalist Thomas Dixon reported that the President spent over Le 200 million on overseas trips in 2024 alone.

Elected in 2018 on promises of fiscal discipline and a crackdown on corruption following years of economic decline and a bloated wage bill, Bio was declared winner in the 2023 election, defeating opposition leader Samura Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC).

However, with less than three years left in his second term, critics argue that the President has yet to demonstrate the economic leadership required to lift Sierra Leone out of poverty.
