Magistrate Soa Mamakoh Betty Kallon of the Pademba Road Court No. 3 has sentenced a businessman, Alex Conteh, to two years’ imprisonment for obtaining money by false pretence in connection with a fraudulent palm oil deal in Freetown.

Conteh pleaded guilty to the offence, which contravenes Section 32(1) of the Larceny Act of 1916.

According to police records, the incident occurred on April 20, 2025, at Spur Loop, Wilberforce, where Conteh obtained Ninety-Five Thousand Leones (Le95,000) from Sankoh Koroma under the false pretext of purchasing palm oil on his behalf.

During court proceedings, the accused admitted to the charge when the facts were read out. Magistrate Kallon inquired whether any of Conteh’s relatives were willing to repay the defrauded amount. Conteh identified his sister, who was called to testify but refused to make restitution, stating that she was “not there to pay the said money.”

In delivering her judgment, Magistrate Kallon emphasized the seriousness of fraud-related offences and the need to deter others from engaging in similar acts.

She described the accused’s actions as “a deliberate attempt to defraud an innocent citizen under the guise of business,” before sentencing him to two years at the Male Correctional Centre in Freetown.
