Former Minister of Internal Affairs, Alhaji Musa Tarawally, has publicly called on President Julius Maada Bio to caution the conduct of First Lady Fatima Bio, describing her behaviour as potentially undermining relations between the President and sections of the public.
Tarawally made the remarks in a video circulating on social media, where he said his decision to address the President directly was prompted by concerns he believes could strain political harmony and national stability.
According to Tarawally, his attention was drawn to discussions and messages on social media allegedly made by a blogger identified as Samura, whom he described as an associate of the First Lady. He said the discussions referenced him and prompted his response.
Addressing President Bio, Tarawally stated that many individuals had worked tirelessly to support the President’s political success and the development of Sierra Leone, but warned that the conduct of the First Lady was “crossing boundaries.”
He cautioned that if the President failed to rein in his wife’s actions, he and others would challenge her influence within the political space in what he described as the interest of national stability.
“She should not be going around with the ambience of power, police, and army intimidating people or sending vulnerable boys to insult others,” Tarawally said. “If you fail to control your wife, which is your responsibility, her behaviour will create a problem between us, because I cannot accept it.”
Tarawally further alleged that the First Lady had disrespected several members of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), including the party chairman, and said he would not tolerate such conduct.
He also criticised what he described as indiscipline within the SLPP, saying it should not be occurring under President Bio’s leadership.
In addition, Tarawally proposed the regulation of bloggers, arguing that recognised channels for information dissemination should be limited to print and electronic media. He warned that the unchecked activities of bloggers could be used for political propaganda and blackmail.
“I respect you as President, but I want you to warn, advise, and control your wife,” Tarawally said. “She holds no constitutional office. She is the First Lady, and because of that we respect her, but she does not have the right to use the ambience of power to intimidate people or target opponents. It is unacceptable, and I will resist it fearlessly.”
