The Government of Sierra Leone has projected a possible reduction in rice prices as the implementation of the Feed Salone programme continues, with Presidential Spokesman Hon. Alpha Kanu saying prices could fall significantly if current efforts are sustained.
Speaking on Truth Media, Kanu said the government’s agricultural initiative is aimed at increasing local rice production and reducing the pressure of rising food prices on citizens.
He said early signs of progress have been recorded in some parts of the country, citing Port Loko as an example where the price of a cup of rice has reportedly reduced from Le10 to Le4.
According to Kanu, the reduction comes despite the ongoing lean season, which usually runs from June to September and is often associated with reduced food availability and increased market prices.
He attributed the expected further decline in rice prices to key areas of the Feed Salone programme, including expanding agricultural production, introducing modern farming equipment, and improving post-harvest management to reduce losses for farmers.
“The goal is to increase production and ensure more affordable food for Sierra Leoneans,” Kanu said, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening local agriculture and reducing dependence on imported rice.
The Presidential Spokesman also commented on reports suggesting that food insecurity in the country has reduced from 28 per cent to 13 per cent. He advised that such figures should be carefully verified to ensure accurate measurement of national food security progress.
The government continues to present Feed Salone as a major strategy for improving food security, supporting farmers, and increasing domestic food production.
