President Julius Maada Bio has officially commissioned the ECOWAS Logistics Depot in Lungi, describing the facility as a strategic investment in preparedness, resilience, and collective security across the West African region.

The depot is designed to enhance the operational readiness of the ECOWAS by providing logistical support for peace support operations, humanitarian interventions, and emergency response efforts.

According to President Bio, the installation comprises two key components. The first is an administrative and maintenance complex that will serve as the central logistics and operational hub for ECOWAS missions. The second is a dedicated training facility that will provide capacity-building programmes for police officers, military personnel, and humanitarian responders from Sierra Leone and other African countries.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the President said the facility reflects the region’s commitment to strengthening cooperation in addressing security threats, humanitarian crises, and natural disasters. He noted that the depot would improve ECOWAS’s ability to respond rapidly and effectively whenever member states require assistance.

The President added that the investment demonstrates a shared vision of collective responsibility, stressing that peace, stability, and security are essential foundations for sustainable development across West Africa.

The ECOWAS Logistics Depot is expected to play a major role in supporting regional peacekeeping operations by ensuring the timely deployment of personnel and equipment. It will also serve as a centre for training and coordination, helping to improve the preparedness of security and humanitarian agencies in responding to emergencies.

The commissioning marks another milestone in Sierra Leone’s contribution to regional peace and security initiatives under the ECOWAS framework, reinforcing the country’s role as a partner in promoting stability and cooperation within the sub-region.
