The National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) is urging all citizens and residents aged 12 and above to register for the new biometric national ID card, launched last year.

As part of a renewed push, the government is highlighting the enhanced security, streamlined access to services, and broader use cases of the ID, including mandatory travel document and student exams requirement.

Boosting Security and Services: The high-tech card, personalized by X Infotech and equipped with ICAO-compliant biometrics, aims to improve both personal security and access to government and private sector services. By simplifying identification, individuals can expect smoother transactions with banks, businesses, and other institutions.

Making Registration Easy: To reach more people, the NCRA has opened dedicated centers and offices across the country, ensuring easy accessibility. The agency emphasizes the ID as a “civil responsibility” and hopes to see a significant increase in registrants in 2024.

Mandatory for Travel and Exams: Starting this year, the ID card becomes mandatory for both domestic travel at checkpoints and national public exams for primary school students. This integration highlights the government’s commitment to utilizing the ID system for broader security and administrative purposes.

Addressing Fee Concerns: The NCRA acknowledges earlier public concerns about increased fees for obtaining the ID. However, they emphasize the long-term benefits of the secure and multi-purpose system for both individuals and the nation.

A Step Forward: Sierra Leone’s proactive approach to national ID registration demonstrates its commitment to building a secure, digitally-enabled society. With enhanced security features, wider use cases, and increased accessibility, the card has the potential to streamline essential services, boost financial inclusion, and contribute to national development.
