In a strong show of commitment to the fight against drug trafficking and abuse, the Transnational Organised Crime Unit (TOCU), in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the Office of National Security (ONS), and the Pharmacy Board, has destroyed a large consignment of seized illegal drugs following a court order.
The public destruction exercise involved various harmful substances, including cocaine, cannabis, Kush, Tramadol, and other narcotics, marking another milestone in Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of dangerous drugs.
Speaking during the ceremony, NDLEA Director General, Andrew Jai Kai Kai, described the destruction as the third major public burning exercise carried out in 2025. He emphasized that the successful interception of these drugs had prevented severe social and health consequences.
“If we hadn’t intercepted these drugs, many lives could have gone astray,” he stated, reaffirming the agency’s determination to rid Sierra Leone of illicit substances and protect the nation’s youth.
Mr. Kai Kai further called on all Sierra Leoneans including community leaders, the media, and religious institutions to play a proactive role in the fight against drug abuse. He urged citizens to report any suspicious drug-related activities through the toll-free line 117.
He concluded with a unifying message: “Together, let’s keep our streets safe and drug-free.”
The exercise underscores the government’s continued zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking and its commitment to safeguarding public health and national security.
