Residents of Makeni continue to express concern over the deplorable condition of the Makama Road, especially during the rainy season when transportation and access to essential services become increasingly difficult.
Among those raising alarm is Abie Nancy Sesay Conteh, Advocacy and Communication Officer for the National Commission for Children North, who has shared a painful personal experience she says was linked to the poor state of the road.
According to Madam Conteh, she lost a five-month pregnancy between 2021 and 2022 while travelling on a motorbike to seek medical attention during her antenatal visits.
She explained that the condition of the road made movement extremely difficult and delayed her access to healthcare services at a critical time.
Speaking about the situation, Madam Conteh described the Makama Road as dangerous and life-threatening, particularly for pregnant women and other vulnerable residents who rely on the route daily.
She said the road becomes even more hazardous during the rainy season, when heavy mud, flooding, and deep potholes make transportation risky for commuters and commercial motorbike riders.
Madam Conteh noted that many residents in Makeni continue to face serious challenges in accessing healthcare facilities, schools, and other essential services because of the road’s condition.
She is now calling on government authorities and relevant stakeholders to urgently rehabilitate the Makama Road in order to prevent further tragedies and improve the safety and wellbeing of residents.
Her appeal adds to growing concerns from community members who say the road network in the area requires immediate attention to ease transportation difficulties and protect lives, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.
